You can bypass the VATs on these cars. A common problem with the VATs system is that the key chip wears out, or a wire breaks inside the steering column on either side of the ignition module. Now, if you pull the kick panel under the driver's side dash, you will see a two wire lead, one orange and one white, going up to the steering column. There is a connector there as well for this two wire lead, the wires leaving the connector are the same color. Take the key to a GM dealership and have them tell you what ohms the key chip is. Go to Radio Shack and buy some inline resistors to total the resistance level of the key chip, and unhook the connector. The end of the connector that runs away from the steering column should be the female end of the connector. Plug the resistors into this end, and just like that, the VATs is bypassed. The VATs reads the resistance across the key chip, and if the resistance is there with the resistors in the loop, then the VATs thinks that the key is always in, and you should be able to start the car, unless the VATs module that reads the resistance is bad. But, that typically is not the problem.
